Post-Game: We apologize for the interruption of this afternoon’s blog. Following a 25 minute rain delay, Agawam was shut down in the fourth inning. West Springfield then scored the only run of the game on a bunt single, sacrifice bunt, and then a double over centerfielder Witaszek’s head. It made the score 1-0 after four innings. That score held up and Agawam was ousted from the playoffs.

Please see more action and photos from the game in next Thursday’s Agawam Advertiser News.

Top 4: Rain is coming down and this blog-cast will stop. We’ll be back as soon as possible.

Bottom 3: Rain is still threatening as we start the bottom of the third Mindy Acevedo leads off.

First pitch fouled off. Circosta has only allowed one hit thus far. Bunt attempt, and it’s successful as the throw is late.

Mike: Anything you can do to get it started for your team in a low scoring game like this. Nice bunt.

Kim Machia fouls the ball off and Wieners catches it for one out. Amanda Butler, the number nine hitter, at the plate. Pitch just a bit high and it’s 1-0. Another ball and then a strike and it’s 2-1. Bunt at home plate and Butler is thrown out 2-4 with Rheault covering first, two outs.

Back to the top of the order and Hill with a runner on second. We have just heard thunder. The umpires will stop the game at the first sight of lightning. Pop to short and the inning is over with one left.

Thunder still making noise, we have no score after three innings.

Top 3: Brittany Discher leads off. Swing and a miss, gased right by her. Grounder into the hole between third and short and Discher is aboard for the pitcher Circosta.

Bunt fouled off and it’s 1-1. Foul and it’s 1-2. Popped up and caught in centerfield. One down.

Ollari back up. She grounded to second last time up. Two foul balls.

NOTE: Rain is nearby and this blog will terminate if we have rain.

1-2 to Ollari with Discher at first. Ollari hangs in with the change up and laces the ball to left field. First and second, one out, and Rheault at the plate.

Swing at high heat and it’s 0-2. Gas and Rheault strikes out swinging. Leaving it to Wieners, who hit a single up the middle last time. High, ball one. High again, ball two. Pitkin pitching carefully to the three hitter. Next pitch, low strike, 2-1. Popped foul and it’s 2-2. Fly ball to short left-center, caught on the shoe strings in center field and we’re through in the top of the third. Still no score.

Bottom 2: Taylor Saimeri at the plate for West Side. She struck her out and Circosta has her first K of the day. One down.

Tiffany Tompson at the plate for the Terriers. First two pitches out, 2-0. Another pitch on the outside swung on and missed. Check swing, ump rules she went, 2-2. Fly ball. Caught. Two down.

Next up is Caitlin Patruski. She builds a 2-1 count. Fouled off and the count evens 2-2. Fly ball to left, caught by Johnson, and it’s a 1-2-3 inning.

Mike: Great game. This going to come down to the last inning. We might see extra innings in this one. You have to love good pitching and solid defense by both teams

Top 2: Ally Witaszek leads off for Agawam on the left side of the plate. First pitch fouled off. Next pitch high and in, whizzed right by her face. Witazsek takes a high pitch and finds the gap in right-center. She runs for a while and ends up at third with a leadoff triple.

Mike: Frozen rope to the right-center. She was off to the races on that one.

Jess Uschmann at the plate. Bunt attempt, but it fails as Witaszek doesn’t score and Uschmann is out third to first. Nicole Johnson at the plate with one down.

First two pitches outside the strike zone. Grounded back to the mound, pitcher goes to first and Witaszek’s off to home. Return home from first is in time and it’s a doube play. 1 1/2 done, no score.

Mike: Stand up defense by West Side, good return throw home to keep it scoreless.

Bottom 1: Vicky Hill at the plate. She will be facing Danielle Circosta, one member of Agawam’s powerful three-girl rotation. Bunt attempt on the second pitch. Ollari charges from third and throws to Rheault covering first, one down.

Alyssa Torres at the plate. Circosta splits a pair and it’s 1-1. Next pitch low for a ball. Rise ball fouled off and it’s 2-2. Low and in and it’s a full count. Next pitch is socked into a center for a base hit.

Mike: Solid piece of hitting right up the middle.

Next hitter is Kelsey Mantoni. The pitch, soft line drive up the middle, stabbed by Circosta for the out, and the throw to first to double off Torres and that’s the inning.

Mike: Great presence of mind by the pitcher to stay with that ball and make the play.

We’ve played one, no score.
Top 1:We have Maurisa Ollari to lead off for the Brownies, who are looking to win the rubber match of the season between these two teams.

First pitch upcoming and it’s ground to second base. The play made by Machia and there is one out. Faith Rheault, a freshman, stands in on the left side and Pitkins delivers a pair of strikes to start. Defensive swing and Rheault pops out foul to third. Two down.

Freshman catcher Rielly Wieners stands in. Pitkin delivers a ball. Next pitch is fouled off, 1-1. Low fastball and Wieners grounds it up the middle. Courtesy runner in at first base, Lauren Brodeur, a freshman. Rebecca Fondakowski comes to the plate. She is DHing today for Samantha Butt, the shortstop.

Two down, runner at first, 0-1 to Fondakowski. Another foul ball and it’s 0-2. Wild pitch high and outside and Brodeur takes second, 1-2 the count. Next pitch just a bit outside for a ball, she tried the corner and missed. 2-2. Rise ball and Fondakowski strike out and the inning is over. One hit, one left on, it’s Brownies 0, West Springfield coming up.

We’re set to go with the first pitch. I’m also joined today by my good friend and sport enthusiast Micheal J. Fox, who will be providing some color commentary throughout today’s game, so I thank Mike for joining me. Umpires are at home plate and the teams are going over the ground rules.

Pre-game: Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s live blog of the Western Massachusetts Division I Softball Tournament Semifinals here at Elms College in Chicopee.

Hello again, I am your live blogger, Turley Publications correspondent Greg Scibelli

Tonight, I will be bringing the action between No. 3 Agawam and No. 2 West Springfield. Both teams have won quarterfinal match ups at this point and both are primed for a rematch of last year’s semifinals in which the Terriers won 5-2.

Many could call this tournament now the Valley League tournament, as the four remaining teams in the tournament all hail from the Valley League. The other semifinal pits No. 1 Amherst, perfect this season, against No. 4 Minnechaug. That game was rained out last night and will be made up tomorrow evening. Miaa.net still have the final set for Saturday at a time to be determined.

I’ll be bringing you the action periodically and all you have to do is update your web browser every few minutes to keep current with the action. I hope you really enjoy the blog and the starting lineups and more will be coming up shortly.

As always, this blog cast is brought to you by Turley Publications, your best source for local news and sports in Western Massachusetts.

The lineups and more in just a few minutes:

2:01 2nd quarter: Murphy steals after the timeout and gets fouled going to the hoop. She will shoot two. She makes one and Monson is is doubling up on South Hadley 20-10. Metzger steals and scores and it’s 22-10. 5:22 left in the 2nd and the Tigers get a jump ball in their favor. Aggressive move by the Tigers’ Casey O’Connor and she charges for the lay up and draws the foul, but fails on the three-point play and it’s 22-12 Monson. Tigers steal on the other end and they take over. Monson steals it back. Boyle an impressive turnaround hook and it’s 24-12 with 3:37 left. Rebound for Monson and then a Tiger steal and there is a lot of back and forth action so far tonight with Monson getting the better shooting for the score difference.

Good passing Monson but Murphy misses a shot with 2:01 left. Score is still 24-12.

6:16 2nd quarter: Boyle is fouled to start the 2nd. She makes the first shot but misses and the second and has three points now for the night. South Hadley with the ball now and Monson leads 15-10. Blocked shot by Boyle and Monson steals. Murphy misses for three and the Tigers again have the ball. A missed shot and back to Monson’s end where Boyle scores for five points on the evening and a 17-10 lead. Steal for Murphy and Monson leads 19-10. Timeout on the court with 6:16 left.

End 1st quarter: Metzger makes one shot and South Hadley follows up with a basket and a steal, score is now 10-8 Monson with 1:10 left. Monson steal and Brooke Murphy gets the open break to make it 12-8. Tigers with the ball. Three-point attempt fails and Monson rebounds. Good pressure from the Mustangs, but the Tigers grab another basket with 10 seconds left. Danielle Muirhead scores to end the 1st for Monson. The Mustangs lead 14-10.

2:12 1st quarter: South Hadley gets a pair of free throws and makes one to tie the score. The Tigers are really given Monson a hard time to start the game. They are showing to be much better than their 7-11 record suggests. Boyle rebounds with 3:50 left and two passes later scores her first two points of the game to make it 6-4 Monson. I should note that South Hadley is looking thin tonight with just eight players dressed for varsity action tonight.

Back to the action as Monson misses a three-pointer and we’re inside 3:00. The Mustangs get a rebound and Katelyn Metzger hits for three from the top of the circle to make it 9-4 Monson. The Tigers get a lay up to make it 9-6. Metzger draws a foul with 2:12 left in the quarter.

Game start: Meghan Boyle beings tonight’s action with 13-5 Monson just 61 points away from 1,000 points entering tonight with 939 points. She was honored earlier tonight as one of the top players in school history, coming in near the top in many statistical categories.

Let’s get the game action underway. Monson starts off with a basket and leads 2-0. Both teams then struggle exchanging possession for well over a minute as we get to 6:38 in the 1st. Boyle intercepts a pass and Monson takes over. South Hadley gets a defensive rebound and we still only have a 2-0 lead for Monson. A long three-pointer attempt goes over the glass and Monson takes over. Steal from South Hadley and we’re going up and down the court with 5:22 left. The Tigers break through with a three-pointer followed by a basket by Monson making it 4-3 Monson with 4:42 left in the quarter.

South Hadley’s JV defeats Monson JV 47-41 in overtime. Game upcoming at about 7:20 p.m.

Pre-game Update: It looks like we will be delayed with the start of tonight’s game as we were scheduled for a 7:00 game time. However, the junior varsity match up has just gone to overtime at 6:52 p.m. We’ll get the blog-cast going just as soon as the varsity teams head into action.

Post Game Thoughts:
Congratulations to South Hadley field hockey on a wonderful season. These girls went up against a very tough Smith Academy team that plays in a tough league and had the best record in Western Massachusetts. In addition, they handed Division I’s Longmeadow their only loss of the season.

The Tigers scored first and between their defense and goalie Mic Boyer, it was South Hadley’s day in the sun (unfortunately I don’t mean that literally) for 40 minutes of this contest.

The Falcons are the champions but a team that won 12 games this season and overcame several challenges, including Mohawk and Frontier to get to this game, should make the Tigers feel very proud of what they accomplished this season.

Thanks to all of you who checked out my blog this morning, I appreciate you and your readership to Turley’s Publications.

Completion of Game
South Hadley fights after the timeout and earns a penalty corner at 8:45. Smith intercepts a pass and takes over and goes all the way to South Hadley’s end. Dangerous play gives the ball back to the Tigers and rain stays hard in this game.

Ball is moving back and forth here as we close inside four minutes.

What a run in this game. In just a few minutes, the complexion of the game has completely changed. I’m interested to hear what coach Tara Cole has to say following this game. Don’t forget, you can read the complete story on this championship game this Friday in the Town Reminder.

The Tigers are trying to get into Smith’s circle as we get down to 2:30 left in the game. You have to think South Hadley is more frantic trying to put this game into overtime.

With 1:35, Smith Academy scores and this game has been put to bed. Sarah Wickles scores and this game is over. The Falcons will add another goal after another penalty corner. Goal scored is by Slysz. 4-1 Smith Academy

After 60 minutes, your finals is Smith Academy 4, South Hadley 1. Congrats to the Smith Academy Falcons, your Western Massachusetts Division II Champions.

20:00 2nd Half to 9:11 2nd Half
19:23, following a Smith Academy time out, Stephanie Slysz passes left to Alyssa Woodward, who scores and makes it 1-1.

What a difference 30 seconds can make. The blog continued to favor South Hadley, which dodged bullet after offensive bullet from their opponents, the number one seeded Falcons. And we also have other sub plots, including the pouring rain and a driven Tigers team.

Smith gets another penalty corner with 16:40 left in the game. The Falcons squeeze the ball through on their third shot. The Tigers defense put up an admirable fight, but Stephanie Slysz is the one who gets the stick on it for the goal. Rain falls even harder at a pouring pace at this point as Smith now leads 2-1. Time of the goal 16:32.

Smith penalty corner at 13:06 leads to a second corner call. South Hadley clears the ball to the outside but lose the ball out of bounds and Smith takes over.

Time out called by South Hadley at 9:11.

Halftime to 20:00 2nd Half
We start the second half the same way the first did with Smith back in aggressive control. The Tigers spend a brief moment in Smith’s end but the ball is cleared out by the Falcons as we get down to 27 minutes. Mic Boyer continues her great game with a pair of saves on consecutive plays by Smith.

Smith draws their first corner at 26:25. They try to get the ball to the left post for a squeeze play, but a foul is called thanks to great South Hadley coverage and the ball is cleared.

Ball rolls out of bounds. Smith’s inbound pass is blocked as the Tigers gain confidence.

Boyer gets in a tough collision, taking down a Smith player trying to score. A penalty corner is awarded and Smith again rushes the goal. They nearly get it through Boyer’s legs but a foul is called the Tigers again avoid being scored on. I continue to say this through the entire blog-cast but so far, this just happens to be South Hadley’s day.

Halftime
Tim Peterson reported in during the halftime as he and Dave Henry, Turley Photographer, are covering the Division II Girls Soccer Championship at Westfield State College. Belchertown holds a 1-0 lead over Wahconah though Wahconah has controlled most of the play in the match up. We’ll get more updates as soon as they come in.

10:12 1st Half to Halftime
Action slows down a bit and spends a majority of time in the midfield. Foul calls starting to dictate changes in possession as Smith Academy tries anything to tie the score. South Hadley’s defense is clinging to their goal.

Smith gets along hit at 7:27 but the Tigers are able to clear to midfield where the ball is intercepted by Smith. The Falcons get the free hit but are intercepted by the Tigers. Smith regains the and attempts a one-timer to Smith’s Alyssa Woodward. Instead of getting an open-goal shot, she misplays and the ball hits her foot, ending the threat with 5:32 left in the half.

Today just is not Smith’s day as they shoot wide right again. They’re just not able to get that big shot.

Another close attempt at 3:20 with Smith shooting right at Boyer. Boyer put her body in the way and the shot deflected outside. The Tigers will have her to thank if they pull this one out. Coach Tara Cole said at the quarterfinals Boyer is getting a chance to shine these games.

The Tigers held a quick offensive sequence as the time closed to two minutes left in the half but Smith regains control. You can bet the Tigers will get a lot of praise at halftime for their hard work. Smith with a corner inside a minute but Smith’s Lindsey Gondek shoots wide left and South Hadley will get a chance to close the half wtih the lead.

Another corner upcoming as time runs out and the shot is wide and South Hadley heads to halftime leading 1-0.

20:16 1st Half to 10:12 1st Half:
Smith comes on stronger after the whistle blows, earning two penalty corners. South Hadley continues to finese their way to opportunities on the other side. Thus far, they have made the most of what they have been given.

You have to continue to credit South Hadley’s defense, and goalie Boyer for hanging in there with an aggressive Smith offense. So far, they have no allowed anything by despite some good shots from Smith shooters.

Rain is continuing to fall harder as the game goes on but the MIAA decided to get the game in sooner.

Scary moment with 15:20 left as Smith shot and it was deflected high in the air by a South Hadley defender. But the Tigers regain control at midfield as Meghan McCaflin tries to move the ball into Smith’s end.

As the 1st half continues, the Tigers are starting to get more aggressive with a pair of shots on goal plus a penalty corner during the last five minutes. It was crucial the Tigers scored first as they attempt to topple the top seed.

Open to 20:16 1st Half:

Quick start to the game for Smith Academy, which takes a shot on goal early. They earn a free hit from outside the circle followed by a long hit and hold the possession advantage to start.

The Tigers get the ball back and clear out only to lose the ball again.

A minute later, South Hadley thru’s the ball the Smith GK. She kicks the ball away and Smith takes the ball back to South Hadley’s end. Smith draws a penalty corner by a dangerous play but Smith’s shot on goal is wide left.

Smith goes to end-to-end a second time as we close in on 24:00 left in the half and shoot off the right goal post and earn a long hit. The hit is nearly kicked away by South Hadley keeper Mic Boyer but a corner is called again. Boyer blocks a hard shot and Smith now takes two long hits in a row as they continue to pepper the goal with shots.

With 21:50, South Hadley earns a penalty corner. Two passes later, South Hadley scores to make it 1-0 Tigers at 21:39. The goal goes to Kayla Narey, unassisted.

Pre-game:
Good morning everyone and welcome to today’s live blog-cast of the Western Massachusetts Division II Championship game here at Mount Holyoke College.

We have a great match up this morning as Smith Academy, ranked number one in Division II with an 18-2 record, including 16-2 in the regular season. They will take on No. 3 South Hadley High School, which has a record of 12-5-3 record, 10-5-3 in the regular season.

The road to the tournament for South Hadley included going through Mohawk, which beat them in last year’s tournament. The Tigers won 1-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Tigers beat second-seeded Frontier Regional 3-2 in two overtimes.

This morning’s game is being blog-casted for you all by Turley Publications sports, which provides the best in local news coverage in several towns all over Western Massachusetts.

Following today’s blog-cast of this game, you can catch the game story and photos from the game in Town Reminder, your source for local South Hadley news.

Today’s game will be played under raw, rainy conditions. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has chosen to go on with today’s matchups despite the poor weather. In addition to this game, there are other championships going on.

Game time is set here for 11:00 a.m. as well and we’ll be bringing you blog coverage of this match up.

We’ll do our best to keep up with the fast-paced game and please take the time to look through the rosters for each team to help you keep track of the action.
